2010 Preakness betting odds won’t be as affected by the post position as much as Kentucky Derby odds were but that doesn’t mean the post position is not a factor. There are certain posts that have had more success in Preakness Stakes odds than others.
2010 Preakness betting a year ago was historic as the filly Rachel Alexandra won from post #13. That was the first time a horse had ever won from that post. It should be noted though that oftentimes there are not even 13 horses in the field. There are some post positions you really don’t want to be betting on. The first three post positions have been a disaster recently. There has not been a winner from any of those three posts since Tabasco Cat in 1994.
In the last 12 years the winning posts have been on the outside for the most part. The outside posts of 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 and 13 have won seven times in the last twelve years. Since 2000 the top three post positions are post position #4, post position #7 and post position #8. Each of those has two victories. Post positions 9, 11, 12 and 13 have won the other four races in Preakness Stakes odds. Going back another two years we see that post positions 6 and 10 have wins. What this says is that you don’t want a horse starting from the inside at the Preakness. Even the far outside is better than the rail when it comes to the Preakness in recent years.
Things are constantly changing in horse racing and trends can also change. In recent history, trainers of top horses have avoided the inside posts as much as possible at Pimlico. The trainer of Rachel Alexandra preferred to start on the outside rather than the rail a year ago. That strategy proved to be successful. Anything is better than getting jammed at the rail and running out of room.
The post positions in the Preakness are not supposed to be as important as they were in the Kentucky Derby but there is one exception to that rule and as we have seen that is the inside posts. Horses simply don’t do very well from the inside in the Preakness so that is something to keep in mind as you look at the post positions in 2010 Preakness betting.
