Preakness Odds at SBG Global

Preakness odds are available each May on the second race in horse racing’s Triple Crown. Normally Preakness odds favor the Kentucky Derby winner, but not this year.  Let’s take a look at Preakness odds and some of the information you need to know.

Preakness information tells us that the race is run at 1 3/16 miles.  That means it is shorter than the Derby which was run two weeks ago and much shorter than the Belmont which is run in three weeks.  Normally in Preakness odds there are between 8 and 12 horses in the field but this year a full field of 14 is expected.  Preakness odds really are focused on the favorite.  In fact, more than half the time the favorite in Preakness Stakes betting has won the race. Usually the favorite is about 2-1 in Preakness although this year the favorite could be even money as that is what the Preakness odds on the filly Rachel Alexandra would be.

As you look at Preakness Stakes betting you must look at the favorite first.  When the favorite wins half the time in a race you start with that horse and go from there in Preakness Stakes betting.  As you look at Preakness handicapping and online betting you do have to remember a few things.  The Derby winner should get your attention but that doesn’t mean the horse always wins. Back in 2005 it was Giacomo winning the Derby at 50-1 odds and failing in the Preakness.  That same online sports betting result could happen this year to Mine That Bird who won the Derby at 50-1 odds.

Normally when you bet the Preakness in online sports betting you want to bet on horses that were in the Derby.  Horses that were not in the Derby and then are entered in the Preakness are 2-23 in the last 25 races.  Those are just not good odds but this year they could be broken since the filly Rachel Alexandra is expected to be the favorite and she was not in the Derby.

The Preakness is more of a speed race than the Derby or Belmont so you want a horse with speed. Closers almost never win this race so you can usually throw them out.
