Three Straight 2nds for Nehro
Nehro is definitely getting used to being the bridesmaid in races. He has now finished second in three straight races. He lost by a neck to Pants on Fire in the Louisiana Derby, by a neck to Archarcharch in the Arkansas Derby and then was beaten by Animal Kingdom in the Kentucky Derby. He has had three races in six weeks so it would be a tough test to go in the Preakness on May 21st. His owner, Ahmed Zayat said that the Preakness is still possible but not probable. Zayat said the top priority is getting the horse ready for the Breeders’ Cup Classic in November and a better path would be the Belmont Stakes in June and then perhaps the Haskell.
Pace Hurts Nehro
If you look at the pace of the Kentucky Derby it was surprising that Nehro could even finish second. The horse is a dead closer and the pace in the Derby was very slow. The half-mile time and the six-furlong time were the slowest since 1947. Those slow times really hurt Nehro’s chances but jockey Corey Nakatani saw what was going on and kept Nehro closer than he normally would have been. That gave Nehro a chance but he couldn’t match Animal Kingdom in the stretch. Trainer Steve Asmussen said there was simply not enough pace. Zayat is getting used to finishing second in the Derby. He had Pioneerofthenile in 2009 that was second in the Derby to Mine That Bird. Last year Zayat had Eskendereya who would have been the favorite in the Derby but was withdrawn due to injury.
Animal Kingdom Favored
The favorite to win the 136th running of the Preakness on Saturday, May 21st is Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom and he will likely get a lot of action from gamblers making a Preakness Stakes bet. He will probably go off at odds of 2-1 or 3-1 in Preakness Stakes betting. Animal Kingdom was a longshot winner in the Derby but did get some action as his odds dropped from 30-1 to 20-1.
