The Flyers lost starter Ray Emery to injury earlier this season and now they will be without backup Michael Leighton. He was replaced by Brian Boucher. Leighton is expected to miss 8-10 weeks so that really ends his season. The Flyers will now have to count on Boucher or they will have to find another goalie. Boucher is the starter for now with Jeremy Duchesne the backup.
Philadelphia has survived this season even without great goaltending. Emery played pretty well before getting hurt while Leighton had been solid. Boucher has been a starter in the past but his recent play really doesn’t lend a lot of confidence to him playing well as the starter in goal.
Philadelphia plays at Atlanta on Saturday and then the face the Thrashers again on Sunday in the back end of a home and home. Philadelphia had a six point lead over the Rangers in the Eastern Conference standings. The Flyers were in 7th place in the standings. The concern for the Flyers will be if they can hold on to a playoff spot with a third string goalie. A further concern is whether they have any chance to win in the playoffs with Boucher in goal.
The Flyers have a decent offense as they are 7th in the league in goals scored. What gamblers may want to consider is taking Philadelphia games over the sports betting total.
