Sports betting on the Texas Longhorns will look a little different this college football season as Colt McCoy is in the NFL. It will now be Garrett Gilbert leading a Texas team that is capable of winning it all. The Longhorns are not the favorite in Internet sports betting but they are a contender along with Alabama, Florida and USC.
Sports betting had Texas head coach Mack Brown saying that he expects Gilbert to step right in and replace McCoy. It will not be easy considering McCoy set an NCAA record with 45 career victories as a starting quarterback. Internet sports betting had McCoy getting hurt in the BCS Championship game and Gilbert had to come in as a freshman and play. He did pretty well for never having played but Texas lost in sports betting to Alabama 37-21.
Texas not only has to replace McCoy but also wide receiver Jordan Shipley. They also have to replace three starting offensive linemen: center Chris Hall, left guard Charlie Tanner and left tackle Adam Ulatoski. Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis believes the offense will be just fine. He said that four years ago everyone wondered how Texas would do without Vince Young. They just reloaded and kept winning and that is expected to happen again during the 2010 Internet sports betting season.
While McCoy was a very good quarterback for Texas, Gilbert may be able to do some things that McCoy could not. Gilbert is a bigger quarterback who can really throw. He will have a number of options including James Kirkendoll, Malcolm Williams, John Chiles, Marquise Goodwin and Greg Timmons. Gilbert will be more of an NFL style quarterback and that could help Texas in sports betting. They will still use the shotgun but not nearly as much as they did with McCoy. The running game will also be emphasized more with a young quarterback and that should make Texas more balanced on offense.
While Texas was a success straight up last season they were not very good against the sports betting odds. They were just 5-8-1 against the sports betting point spread. They might be better this coming sports betting college football season since not as much will be expected with a young quarterback. Perhaps that is a good thing for Texas and a good thing for those that take the Longhorns in Internet sports betting this season.
