Sports Betting – New York Surprise as Terry Collins Named Mets Manager. The New York Mets are always in the sports betting spotlight because they are a New York team and they made some news this weekend with the hiring of Terry Collins as their new manager.
He will be the 20th manager in team history and his hiring is a surprise. He has not managed in the Major Leagues since 1999. It will be interesting to see how the Mets perform next season against the online sports betting odds with Collins at the helm.
Terry Collins
Last season Collins was the Mets minor league field coordinator. He managed in Japan in 2007 and in 2008 and was the manager of China’s team in the World Baseball Classic last year. He has Major League experience as he managed the Houston Astros from 1994 to 1996 and the Anaheim Angels from 1997 to 1999. He had a 444-434 record with those teams.
Mets could be Rebuilding
The hiring of Collins could signal that the Mets are rebuilding. Collins is known for his player development skills and he could be in line to teach some young players. The Mets were 79-83 last season with Jerry Manuel as the manager. It was the second straight losing season for New York. The Mets have spent a lot of money for players and not gotten much production. They already have $130 million committed to payroll for next season. They will not have Johan Santana for the start of the season as he is recovering from shoulder surgery.
The Mets were just 24th in the league last season in runs per game at 4.05. They were pretty good in ERA as they were 7th in the league but you have to think that number is going to go up without Santana in the starting rotation next season. It is simply hard to get too excited about betting the Mets next season. They might be a team to consider if Collins can get some young players into the lineup but they sure don’t look like a serious sports betting contender to win the World Series next season.
Mets 40-1 at SBG
The Mets are 40-1 in online sports betting to win next year’s World Series so the odds makers don’t think too much of their chances either.
