You might have missed it in sports betting with all of the football going on but the Detroit Tigers are having a great off-season.

Victor Martinez
The Tigers got one of the best free agents on the market in catcher Victor Martinez. He is a huge upgrade at catcher for them. He is one of the best hitters in all of baseball and gives Detroit a major bat to go along with Miguel Cabrera in the middle of the lineup. Martinez is a career .300 hitter and will give some protection to Cabrera.
Joaquin Benoit
One of the top relievers on the market was Benoit. He will substantially shore up a huge weak spot for the Tigers. Detroit’s middle relief and setup men have been terrible so getting Benoit is huge. Last season for Tampa Bay, Benoit dominated in the setup role. Now he can do the same for the Tigers in front of Jose Valverde.
More Money to Spend
The Tigers have more money to spend because they don’t have the huge contracts of Magglio Ordonez or Dontrelle Willis anymore. The Tigers might bring back Ordonez but at a far better price. The Tigers already signed Brandon Inge and Jhonny Peralta to reasonable contracts. The Tigers probably won’t make another big splash by signing someone like Carl Crawford or Jason Werth but they shouldn’t be totally ruled out. Detroit does have the money and they are a team with some very good players who could make the playoffs next season. Maybe the Tigers make a move for Kansas City’s Zack Grienke who is on the market. Detroit has the ability to make a trade for Grienke as they have some young pitching talent that might appeal to the Royals. And Grienke would fare much better in Detroit out of the spotlight than he would in New York.
