TCU Builds on Big Leap Forward

When Sonny Dykes was head coach of the California Golden Bears, he was the ultimate fish out of water. Cowboy hats, boots, and chewing tobacco have no place in the land of fruits and nuts. Why Dykes took the job remains a College Football Betting mystery. Following his firing at Cal, Dykes returned to Texas as an assistant to TCU head coach Gary Patterson. Subsequently, a successful stint as head coach of the SMU Mustangs earned Patterson the TCU gig. In his first year, Dykes led the Horned Frogs to their greatest season since 1938.

2023 TCU Horned Frogs Preview

It is true that TCU was annihilated in the 2022-23 national championship game by the Georgia Bulldogs. But all anyone will remember is that they finally made it. Now comes the sports betting reality of dealing with much higher expectations.

For the TCU Horned Frogs, replicating last season’s surprise run to the national championship game won’t be easy for head coach Sonny Dykes. Of great concern is that several of the key assets from the 2022 campaign are gone. Starting with quarterback Max Duggan, receiver Quentin Johnston and linebacker Dee Winters come major holes to fill.

However, the good news is that the College Football Betting cupboard isn’t bare. Quarterback Chandler Morris appears primed for a breakout year. Additionally, the Horned Frogs used the transfer portal to restock the skill positions. Also, the defense remains strong with seven returning starters. Some regression is indeed likely. Especially after winning six games by eight points or fewer last season. But even with the personnel turnover, Dykes’ program will make plenty of noise in the Big 12 this fall.

The 2022 TCU Horned Frogs were the College Football Playoff National Championship and Big 12 Championship runner-up. Now they must dive back into the conference mix without many breaks.

For the 2023 season, not playing Oklahoma State is a help. Consider that there aren’t any easy outs in the Big 12. Thus, missing Cincinnati, Kansas, and UCF isn’t a huge plus. The biggest challenge will be five Big 12 road games. Still, it is not like the Horned Frogs are leaving Texas often. To show, the Horned Frogs don’t leave the Lone Star State until October 7th against Iowa State. Road games at Kansas State and Oklahoma are the most challenging dates.

Also, it is important to note that there aren’t two road games in a row in consecutive weeks. And there isn’t a big stretch of dates away from home. To illuminate, Kansas State and Texas Tech are the away dates. But those road tilts are wrapped around a week off.

Overall, the Horned Frogs have nothing too bad to deal with. This year’s version almost certainly won’t have the 2022 magic. Still, it’s possible to have another huge season with this slate of games.
