The United States is not the sports betting favorite in the 2010 World Cup but they are sure talking like one.The U.S. is a 55-1 longshot in sports betting online odds but you wouldn’t know it by listening to some of their players.
Sports betting odds favor Spain to win the World Cup which begins next month. The U.S. is pretty much an afterthought on the sports betting odds board. The United States has proven they can play with the big buys as they beat Spain and Egypt in last year’s Confederation Cup before losing to Brazil in the final. United States captain Carlos Bocanegra is very confident the U.S. team can win in the World Cup. “When it hits the knockout stages it’s a one-off game, and who knows what can happen? We always take the example [that] we beat Spain in the Confederations Cup [in] a one-off game,” Bocanegra said, “Before that we beat Egypt 3-0, the champions of Africa. So on our day we feel like we can beat anybody.”
The United States has a winnable group as they will face England, Slovenia and Algeria in Group C. “It’s a great chance for us, and we thought we got a fair draw and we have a good chance,” said Bocanegra, “We feel like we have a good team and we have gained a lot of confidence and experience over the past four years.” The sports betting online match against England on June 12th is a big one as it could determine which team wins the group. “That is a cool way to kick off the tournament. It’s a big game. They are a country rich in football history,” Bocanegra said.
Four years ago the U.S. didn’t even make it out of the group stage as they lost to the Czech Republic and Ghana. They did play Italy to a 1-1 draw but they still didn’t make it out of the group stage. Italy went on to win the World Cup four years ago. The U. S. lost all three group games in 1990 and in 1998. They made it out of the group stage in 2002 before losing to Germany by a score of 1-0 in the quarterfinals. Anything less than the quarterfinals this year will be a major disappointment for the United States in the 2010 World Cup.
