Virginia Fires Al Groh Sport Betting

Sport betting on Virginia has not been very successful in recent college football seasons and with all of the losing the university fired head coach Al Groh. The Cavaliers finished the online sports betting season a pathetic 3-9 and were blown out in their last game against rival Virginia Tech, losing by a score of 42-13.

Sport betting had this year being the worst for Virginia football since 1982.  Virginia also lost for the eighth time in nine seasons to Virginia Tech under Groh. Losing to your main rival is just not going to get it down in sport betting. “There is not a coach in the college game who has worked harder than Al Groh in trying to build a football program,” athletic director Craig Littlepage said, “Football is his life and he dedicated himself to the university and to our football team. We are grateful for his service and for his commitment to his players and his coaching staff.”  Sport betting has Groh getting a buyout of over $4 million dollars.

Groh has been at Virginia a long time. He was hired late in 2000.  He leaves as the ACC career leading in wins. He had only two sport betting seasons with more losses than wins but last year was just 6-6 and this year was a disaster. His overall online sports betting record was 59-53 with the Cavaliers. Virginia went to five bowl games, including four straight with Groh at the helm. Groh was the ACC coach of the year in 2002 and 2007. He finished with a 36-36 sport betting record in conference games.

This season things came apart for Groh and Virginia.  The Cavaliers lost their last six games and enthusiasm was lacking.  The team suffered a drop in fans at home this season which really hurt Virginia’s bottom line. Despite going 3-9 straight up this season the Cavaliers went 6-5 against the odds at the offshore sportsbook.  It is surprising they did that well considering they were 105th in the league in total points scored. Their defense was nothing special either as they finished 70th in the country.  Despite those poor sport betting numbers, the Cavaliers finished above .500 versus the lines at the offshore sportsbook.  The Cavaliers actually went over the total six times this season which is always surprising considering they had such a poor offense.
