Red Bulls Make News at the Sportsbook with Signing of Marquez

The New York Red Bulls made news again at the sportsbook as they signed Mexico’s national team captain Rafael Marquez. New York got attention earlier this season when they signed France star Thierry Henry.  New York should be a fun team to watch and perhaps a winning team vs. sports book soccer odds.

Sportsbook odds have not favored New York that much this season as the Red Bulls are last in the Eastern Conference of the MLS.  With the addition of Marquez they may get some action and be favored more often.  New York now has three Designated Players in Henry, Marquez and Juan Pablo Angel.

The addition of Marquez should help New York on and off the field.  He appeared for Mexico in 94 matches and has been their captain since 2002.  He played with Barcelona in recent seasons and was on their championship teams in 2005, 2006, 2009 and in 2010.

New York has only 21 points this season and a total of five wins.  The addition of Marquez is more focused on next season and attracting fans than it is for this year since New York is not part of the playoff race.  Marquez is likely to play midfield for the Red Bulls.  He is not a huge scoring threat but even as his age he is probably better than what New York had in the midfield.  New York has not played well for the most part the season but at least with the additions of Henry and Marquez they should be worth watching. They might even pick up a few more wins along the way.

There is no question that the MLS is getting some attention at the sports book with the addition of players like Henry and Marquez.  What should not be overlooked though is that Henry and Marquez really didn’t have a place in top European leagues. Barcelona didn’t use Henry much last season and they released Marquez just a few days ago.  The MLS simply doesn’t have as much talent as leagues like the Premier or La Liga and players who have big reputations but diminishing skills can still be effective in what is a lower level of soccer in the MLS.
