Australian Open betting on the women’s side should be extremely exciting with a number of players having a real chance to win. Serena Williams is the favorite in tennis betting but she is not an overwhelming choice. Here is a look at all of the major contenders to win the first Grand Slam of the season.
Australian Open has Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin and serious contenders to beat Serena in the first Grand Slam event of the year. Henin has already proven she is ready to get back to her dominant ways. She nearly won her first event back before losing in a third set tiebreaker to Clijsters. Henin goes into Australian Open betting unseeded but she is given a lot of respect by the oddsmakers as she is 4-1 in Australian Open betting. That trails only Serena who is 2.5 to 1 and Clijsters who is 3 to 1.
Serena Williams is the favorite in Australian Open since she won this event last year. Serena is a great player but she simply not focused on every event. She has only defended one Grand Slam title in her career and that was at Wimbledon in 2003 and 2004. She has won the Australian Open four times in 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009. History is against her repeating this year.
The #2 seed in the Australian Open is Dinara Safina but she is a longshot in Australian Open at 21-1. Clijsters and Henin are the more serious threats in tennis betting. Another contender is 2008 Australian Open betting winner Maria Sharapova who is back from shoulder surgery. Focus is the problem for Sharapova as well so it will be interesting to see how she does in Australian Open. She is the fourth choice in tennis betting at 7.5 to 1.
There are some younger players who could surprise in Australian Open betting including Caroline Wozniacki. She made it to the final of the U.S. Open last year and could be an interesting tennis betting choice at 10-1. The other longshot worth a glance is Victoria Azarenka who is 15-1 in Australian Open betting.
Following Serena, Clijsters, Henin and Sharapova in Australian Open is Venus Williams at 8.5 to 1. Wozniacki is 10-1 in tennis bvetting followed by Elena Dementieva at 12.5 to 1, Azarenka at 15-1, Svetlana Kuznetsova at 16-1 and Safina at 21-1.
