Triple Crown betting since 1997 has seen a horse win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes a total of seven times. Each of the first six times the horse failed in Triple Crown wagering in the Belmont. Big Brown will attempt to become the first Triple Crown betting winner since Affirmed in 1978. Triple Crown betting in recent year has seen some excellent horses have a chance at glory only to be denied. Some were just not good enough while others were injured in one of the Triple Crown betting races. Charismatic was definitely a horse that could have won in Triple Crown wagering in 1999 but suffered a fracture in his leg down the stretch and jockey Chris Antley pulled him up, saving his life.
Charismatic was the horse of the year in 1999 and would have been a very deserving Triple Crown winner. Another horse that looked like a sure Triple Crown wagering winner was Barbaro in 2006. He had his hopes end due to an injury in the Preakness. Edgar Prado was the jockey that pulled up Barbaro in the Preakness. It saved his life for a while but in the end the injury cost Barbaro his life.
Triple Crown history saw three Triple Crown winners in the 1970’s but none since. Affirmed won in 1978, Seattle Slew in 1977 and Secretariat in 1973. The Belmont has been the race that has ended so many Triple Crown betting hopes since 1978. Silver Charm just missed Triple Crown glory as Touch Gold won by less than a length. Real Quiet lost in Triple Crown the next year to Victory Gallop in the Belmont. War Emblem looked like a sure Triple Crown winner in 2002 but couldn’t get it done. Funny Cide had a great chance in 2003 in Triple Crown betting but couldn’t win the Belmont.
The latest failure in Triple Crown was Smarty Jones in 2004 as he lost by a length to Birdstone in the Belmont after winning the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. Afleet Alex actually won two of the three Triple Crown races in 2005 (Preakness and Belmont) but whenever a horse loses the Kentucky Derby and then wins the next two races, very few people consider that a Triple Crown wagering miss since there was no chance for that horse after the Derby.
