Come hell or high water the UFC 122 betting action will take place on November 13th, 2010 at the Konig Pilsner Arena in Oberhausen Germany. It’s a bit of an unconventional location for a UFC Main Event and it may not be the wisest place to an event but then again, Dana White is a headstrong guy and he’s going to do what he says he’s going to do; consequences are damned.
The UFC 122 odds event will be just the second time that the UFC has held a Main Even on the European continent. There have of course been several successful Main Events held in London, England over the years but as far as mainland, continental Europe this is just the second time that it’s happened.
And as White well knows, there’s a pretty good reason for that.
The Europeans, at the least the German’s don’t like MMA all that much. At least that’s the message that the government of Germany and other officials are sending to the UFC. In fact, this body has been busy trying to make the UFC 122 betting Main Event as unsuccessful as possible.
For example, there will be no minors permitted at the event itself and none that will be allowed to enter the Konig Pilsner Arena on the night of the UFC 122 odds action. That’s just one thing. Another development that certainly won’t help the UFC’s cause is the fact that that the broadcast of the UFC 122 betting event has been banned by the German government.
Popular German media has roundly condemned not only this even but the entire sport in general. If the UFC is looking to gain a foothold in the European market or at least the German market it’s going to be an uphill battle.
Aside from the difficulties created by the government there doesn’t seem to be all that much interest in the sport itself from Germans. There are almost no German fighters at any level of international MMA competition and obviously the media tends to reflect the tastes of the population in general.
The upcoming UFC event may well be a success but it’s off to a very inauspicious start, to say the least.
