UFC betting odds are based on money lines, which mean you have a favorite and an underdog.
In sports, underdogs can be a profitable way to bet and that is sometimes the case in UFC betting as well. UFC odds many years ago saw underdogs do quite well. The first big UFC events that had UFC a number of upsets. That trend seemed to continue for a while but recently favorites and underdogs have gone back and forth. As you look at UFC odds can you make money by strictly backing the dog?
You need to remember that UFC odds are based on money lines and that means you get plus money on the dog. It is very similar to what you see in baseball, golf, tennis or soccer. If Tiger Woods is matched up against Sergio Garcia then Woods might be -300 and Garcia +250. The same thing happens in UFC odds where one fighter is favored and the other one an underdog.
One difference you will see though with UFC odds is that favorites seem to win more in the events that are not part of the main event. The UFC will have a big event every couple of months but fighters are always preparing for these matches well in advance. It is these non-marquee fights that see favorites do well in UFC betting. In the main events like UFC 86 you probably will see underdogs do well in UFC betting. It seems that in the marquee events the matchups are better and anything can happen in UFC odds.
What is interesting about underdogs in UFC is that they really can win. Anything can happen in a UFC bout and it doesn’t take much for a big underdog to score an early knockdown and win the fight. There have been many favorites of -300 or more that have lost in UFC betting odds. In most sports the public would back the favorites but that is not always the case in UFC odds. It is possible that because underdogs did well early that the public always gives them a look in UFC betting odds.
