Brittney Sykes posted a career-high 19 points and nine rebounds, and Layshia Clarendon had 15 points and nine assists to help the Dream defeat the New York Liberty 81-72 on Sunday night and end a three-game losing streak. League-leading rebounder Jonquel Jones scored a career-best 29 points and grabbed 15 boards – including 15 points and 12 rebounds in the first half – while Jasmine Thomas had 22 points to help the Sun to a 91-85 win against the Indiana Fever on Saturday. Thomas made a three-point shot with 47.3 seconds remaining to give the Sun a 88-85 lead, while Jones hit a free-throw with 11.4 seconds left to make it a two possession game.
The Stars won their very first game of the season after 14 unsuccessful tries on Friday. Isabelle Harrison had 22 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to lead San Antonio to an 89-82 win against the Chicago Sky. The Stars’ season will now go down only as the second-worst start in league history, three short of the Dream’s 17.
